Last night I watched Char­lie Bartlett, a decent enough movie.  What I think they were attempt­ing to go for was a revival of the 80’s brat pack genre of movies.  The movie had a Fer­ris Bueller type of feel to it that it could not quite shake, but at the same time it did not live up to.

Robert Downey Jr. was great in the role, and when isn’t it.  I had a dis­cus­sion with Xie last night on how I think Robert Downey Jr. was Johnny Depp before Johnny was.   This led into a short but inter­est­ing dis­cus­sion.  Who can dethrone Johnny Depp?  Johnny dethroned Robert Downey Jr. and Xie stated because Johnny is bet­ter look­ing.  I pre­fer to think there is some sort of secret plat to keep Johnny at the top of the counter cul­ture actor throne.

There have been con­tenders to the throne:

Ethan Hawke — didn’t quite get it together.

River Phoenix — well he passed away so we can’t fault him.

Leonardo Dicaprio — I think his role in What’s Eat­ing Gilbert Grape along side Depp did him in.

It’s a Depp Conspiracy.

Well beyond that I rec­om­mend you see Char­lie Bartlett and let me know what you think.
