Remember in high school when we had to do the five hundred word essay.  It may have been on Roman Politics and how they were the basis of modern government.  It may have been a book report on Huckleberry Finn, which we were forced to read in high school; for the record I like Tom Sawyer better.   Either way we would dread doing this report.   It could have been given to us two weeks ahead of time, but I’m sure most people didn’t utilize those two weeks.    Instead they put it off knowing sometime in the future they would get around to writing such a paper.

So we would leave until the night before we actually had to turn it in.   We would fret and strive over which words to use and we also liberally used the word “the” and “and” as much as possible counting those along the way.   If anything I am sure our grammar was actually better since better grammar usually has more words.   We would finish page one, one hundred and sixty four words finished.   Doing that math in our head we realized that we needed about three more pages worth of words, cursing the teacher as we struggled on.

We would take synopsis from the text book, paraphrasing along the way.   We would wonder if we actually bothered to use citations in our work if those counted, or if they were just a waste of time.   We wondered if the teacher actually counted each and every word to make sure that we reached the minimum of five hundred.  We worried as we stuffed in more “the”‘s into a sentence on how Custer actually had influence on the following presidential election.   We pretended that we had spent the full time working on the project, in reality the teacher knew that we didn’t, but yet graded us on the great masking of illusion that weaved the BS spilling neatly across the page.

It was all a power struggle, the teacher pushing out hte work and the requirements, the students doing their bare minimum to get by in the hopes that the paper about Zeus was actually going to matter to the Seniors after they graduated.   The teachers taught, and the students pretended to learn.

These days however we know the stupid things that we were taught, truly did nothing to the make us better.  Most of the learning I’ve done in my life I have done best out of the school setting.   Writing also doesn’t intimidate me, five hundred words really is a blink in the moment of time that I can breeze through in a matter of minutes.   I hope my child has the drive to do the same.  Writing is simple.  Writing is easy.  I can ut out five hundred words in no time at all.   This piece is exactly five hundred words and took me 12 minutes to complete – I wonder if I was faster in high school when I didn’t count the words.

Stargate SG-1 Season 6, SG-1 greatness continues – nuff said.

The biggest change for Stargate SG-1‘s sixth season was its move to the Sci-Fi Channel. Financial rescue or genre haven from cancellation? With the addition of his replacement, Jonas Quinn, the new show dynamic (hinted at by the new title theme) meant far more convolutedly involved story arcs and less individual focus. One of very few solo spotlights came from Christopher Judge writing his own show, when “The Changeling” saw Teal’c act out a life as a fireman. One reason for its being a fan favorite was the cameo from still-alive-after-all Daniel Jackson. There’d be several more through the year, culminating in a finale that relied on how much attention you’d been paying to that all-important back-story. Other kooky cameos included Dean Stockwell in one of the many spotlights on the energy resource n’quadria, Ian Buchanan as one of the devilish Replicators (and hopefully the end of that plotline), and regular spots from John DeLancie, Ronny Cox, and Tom McBeath as the Earth-bound series bad guys. More pertinently, we also saw The X-Files‘ Byers (Bruce Harwood) as a scientist involved with the Antarctic Gate. Lest we forget, there are other portals on Earth. Is that an already planned spin-off on the horizon?

At first you may think this post is because Barack Obama won last night, that doesn’t bother me.  I think he’s made history being the first Hawaiian president. We could go on that he’s the first african-american president, but that just puts us back into the same stereotype that made this a battle for him to get to the white house. He had a white parent and a black parent, truly a message to those in the future. Your future is not set by your heritage, but its what you make it yourself.

I knew my candidate wasn’t going to win, I wrote in a name of the only man in the last decade that has soundly spoken to me in politics. That being said I found out yesterday that my vote doesn’t count. Under Ohio state law, if you write in a candidate and that candidate has not registered as a write-in candidate, your vote is dropped and not counted. I legally don’t have a say in the president (or any other position) that has any matter or weight. In theory if everyone except one guy in Ohio performed a write (would never happen), someone could win the state with a total of one vote. This is the anti-thesis of a democracy. Each person is supposed to have one vote and one say.

My choices at the election are limited to candidates that others have decided would be one of the good choices for me to make. I’m not entitled to a true personal opinion. Essentially because I had to waste time to cast a vote that wasn’t counted I did more harm then good. I’m back to not voting ever again, until a politician speaks to me the same way my candidate did.

The people that say if I don’t vote I can’t complain. That is a load of crap. I’ve written about it before and I am writing about it again. Given the information I know now, if I was going to vote again I would do the same thing. Do I still have a say in your mind if I conscientiously write in a vote that I know will be dropped and not counted? I’ll vote for someone I can believe in, you can not tell me I can’t have an opinion or complaint because I don’t have that feeling towards one of the other candidates. You can’t tell me I don’t have a voice because I won’t vote on the lesser of what I consider evils and bad for America.

The ones that have apathy to vote, I can agree with you on. I however will only vote in what I believe in. Those that vote the party line without caring the actual issue or person, they are even worse. For the African -Americans that voted for Obama – I hope you enjoy the man and not the color of his skin. If his skin tone is what made you like him so much more you are wrong. For that voted for McCain because of the color of his skin (or more specifically Obama’s) you are also deeply wrong. The vote should not be about the ethnicity or gender of any candidate, it should not be whether they are republican, democrat, or any other party. It should be a judgment of who the person is. If you however voted for the person that spoke to you, whether you won or lost yesterday you voted correctly. If you voted for the major candidates, you have a voice.

I however, it seems, do not have a voice or a choice. It’s all because I refuse to subjugate myself to not having original thought. I knew I was not making a difference and not causing my candidate to win, but I voted with choice and conviction. I just think it’s wrong that you won’t listen to me, or allow me to have my say when it’s all said and done.

UPDATE:

A commenter below pointed out via snopes that this list is a fake.  Like the commentator stated I only wish Palin to be sunk on her own merits and don’t wish to spread more false accusations.   While I may not like any of the candidates I will only be spreading true stories as far as I can find them.   I’m sorry I didn’t research this thoroughly enough before i posted it.

It’s no real secret that I am very unhappy with both candidates in the race and will vote for neither.   I would Digg or post more things from the Obama side that showed some of the gaffes and issues, unfortunately it seems it is easier to dig up dirt on the republicans.   LiveLeak printed a story about the books that Palin wanted (wants) to ban.  I don’t believe in the banning of any material nor do I believe in censorship.   I believe this is at ethical odds with the freedom of speech.    So even though I consider myself a republican, I guess in Palin’s eyes I’m not a good one.   Let’s look over the ones I have read (read the article for the full list).

I guess with reading all of these books I must be too scarred and converted to be a republican.  I apologize for being dirtied by these words – or something.   I guess I should go start a book bonfire out back – then maybe I’ll fit in with the rest of the party.

Going through my RSS feeds this morning I came across an article, “Ike’s Granddaughter Calls Obama ‘Future of America‘”.  My first thought was good for her.  My second thought was who cares?  What I don’t want to get into is the meat of the article for a moment, let’s look at the headline.   Anyone vaguely aware of presidential politics should be aware that Ike is referring to Eisenhower.   What does his granddaughter have to do with anything.   Why should can claim she is an Eisenhower Republican that doesn’t means she has the same values as Ike.   I don’t really have a care who she supports or her political beliefs, but the fact that because she is Ike’s grand daughter seems to make this news.

My grandfather sold tractors, I don’t particulary like tractors – if a tractor blog going to print “Martin’s grandson predicts tractor sales are dead?”  I don’t think so.

Personally I’m waiting on  the “George Washington’s Distant Cousin Gives McCain a Big Thumbs Up” article.   If I’m really lucky the “Jefferson’s Great Great Great Grandson marries Ben Franklin’s Great Great Great Great Grand Daughter at the Ron Paul Rally” article.   Once again it means nothing.

ANCHOR: Welcome to a very special Diametric Parsecs show.  Tonight, we are extremely fortunate to have an interview with a ghost; a very famous ghost.  Tonight, we sit down with the legendary Creeva Murkado for the first interview he has given since before his mysterious and much talk about disappearance.  But, first, let’s take a look at some of this week’s other top stories…

INT: Thanks, Halla.  [To camera] Perhaps you haven’t heard his haunting kloo melodies.  Perhaps you missed his meteoric rise to fame.  Perhaps you don’t know the inherent weight of his poignant lyrics.  Perhaps you’ve been on a deep space exploration mission.  If any of those are true for you: welcome back to the core worlds, outrider.  This is Creeva Murkado, as we have had the pleasure of knowing him then.

INT: And this is Creeva Murkado as we know him now.

            [Camera shows the musician sitting across from the interviewer]

INT: Thank you very much for coming, Maestro Murkado.

CM: Just Creeva will do.

INT: Well, Creeva, it’s safe to say we all wonder how you’ll top your last stir.

CM: [Chuckles]

INT: After becoming one of the most recognizable stars and most sought after musicians in the galaxy since Crying Dawn Singer, you achieved even more notoriety by suddenly vanishing from out scanners.  And then, you return just as mysteriously as you disappeared.  What’s next?

CM: I was thinking about a warm glass of milk.

INT: [Laughs] May not be as celebrated as your return.

CM: Won’t know until I try.  The public interest is fickle and enigmatic.

INT: When you went missing, a thousand theories were put forth.  Among them, you had been abducted by rebels, killed by pirates, had a nervous breakdown, suffered a drug overdose, committed suicide, were murdered by hutts … the list goes on.  In fact, Ambassador Moyakashkaykrit even went so far as to claim a body had been found in Symphonia.  What really happened?  Where did you go?  Billions of people want to know.

CM: Billions of people also want to know what’s in our neighbouring galaxies.  I think that’s far more important than where one man went.

INT: Is that where you went: Across galaxies on a spiritual journey of inner and outer exploration?  That is one of the theories put forth by some.

CM: Actually, I went to the corner market and got lost in the vegetables section.

INT: I’ll take that as a ‘no’.

CM: Feel free to take it however you like, my friend.  I took it for two small bags of opplocs with some powdered icing for dipping. 

INT: [Sighs] I can see you haven’t lost your talent for being cryptic.  [To camera] When we come back, I’ll have more questions for Creeva Murkado, a musical genius and enigma.

INT: Now, Maestro Murkado (Creeva), you won’t tell us where you went but can you tell us why you left the spotlight for so long, and so mysteriously?

CM: The Why of anything is almost always much more important than the Where of it.

INT: Precisely!

CM: Precisely.

            [Awkward silence]

INT: Well, what I meant to ask was…

CM: …why did I leave?

INT: Yes!

CM: Yes.

INT: Yes?

CM: Yes.

INT: But, Yes to what?

CM: Yes; that’s why I left.

INT: What is why?

CM: Oh, What is rarely ever Why.

INT: Well, what is it that you’ve said is the reason for your disappearance?

CM: I didn’t; you did.

INT: Then could you elaborate on the reasoning?  I’m afraid you’ve lost me.

CM: Elaborate more than simply Why?

INT: Well, yes!

CM: Well, no.

INT: Oh.

CM: [Chuckles] Isn’t the search for knowledge a wonderful thing?  Let me confess; I’m playing a little here.  The reason I left is ‘Why?’  Why me?  Why now?  Why this? Why not that?  Life had become so secure that I had stopped doing the second most important thing in my life – questioning things.  When you stop examining who you are and where you are and what you are doing, you are no longer grounded.  You cannot always look to the future.  You need to be aware of the present and mindful of the past.  To quote a great writer: “The past tempts us, the present confuses us, and the future frightens us. And our lives slip away, moment by moment, lost in that vast terrible in-between.”

INT: So you realized this and left for parts unknown?

CM: Not so much realized it as felt it.  There is quite a difference between the two.

INT: Some would say the suddenness of your unannounced departure could be interpreted as, forgive me, selfish.

CM: [Laughs] There were more qualifiers in that sentence than the start of a pod-racing tournament.  Don’t you mean that you would call it selfish?

INT: Well, erm, I wasn’t implying any assumption on my part.  Only, um, your colleagues and friends had to scramble to address the responsibilities you left behind.  Not to mention the storm of media inquiries and the billions of fans left wondering…

CM: My colleagues are my business, but they wouldn’t be my friends if I had ever thought them to worry about a little thing like this.  And if I made billions of fans wonder at ‘why?’, if I made them stop simply regurgitating my words and my so-called wisdom, and made them actually think for themselves, then the good far outweighs the bad.

INT: What, then, prompted your return?

CM: The lure of the crowd.

INT: But you have neither recorded nor performed before any sizeable audience since your return.

CM: When you are alone for a time, the prerequisite for the term ‘crowd’ grows small. 

INT: Well, when we come back, we’ll see what’s in the future for the always enigmatic Creeva Murkado.

INT: Welcome back! I’m [interviewer name] here with Maestro Creeva Murkado; musician, poet, philosopher.  So, Creeva, now that you’ve returned to us, what are your plans?  Will you return to the prominence of before?

CM: Maybe.

INT: Recording?

CM: Maybe.

INT: Touring?

CM Maybe.

INT: Writing?

CM: Maybe.

INT: Is there anything you’ve determined that you will be doing?

CM: See that’s the best part about life; you just never know what mysteries the universe holds for us around every corner.  The one predictable aspect of the future is that it is inherently unpredictable.

INT: I suppose you’re not planning on telling us the answer, then?

CM: Why ruin the surprise?  The getting there is half the fun. [Chuckles]

INT: You’ve long been friends with the wookiee Moyakoshkaykrit.  Could you tell us what he thinks of the current political climate?

CM: Hmm, no.

INT: Has he not expressed those thoughts to you?

CM: Yes but, not to sound egotistical, this isn’t a show about him, it is about me.  If you want that answer, I suggest you ask him yourself.

INT: Unfortunately, broadcast regulations forbid live broadcast of any wookiee, even one so famous as the Ambassador.

CM: You mean ‘especially one so famous’ as he.

INT: Er, I simply mean … you’re here and …

CM: I suggest you move on to the next question.

INT: Yes, actually we have to take a quick break but, before we do, here’s some footage of your last public concert.

INT: And we’re back with Creeva.  Since you won’t comment on your friend’s opinions, could you tell how you see the current political climate?

CM: There are no politics of significance.

INT: Well, of course, in the greater scheme of life, politics is merely an activity of society and not of nature.  I do understand how, in that respect, there are no politics of significance.

CM: [Chuckles] Well, as Ithorian-friendly as that sounds, I actually meant that in our current society, there are no politics of significance.  There is no senate.  The ultimate rulership of the galaxy falls to one man.  Unless he argues with himself, there is no political environment to speak of. 

INT: COMPNOR would contend the His Imperial Excellency has long promised that if the people disapprove of his leadership, he will step down.  And that he has never forced anyone to do anything that wasn’t for the good of the galaxy. 

CM: And what would you expect him to say?

INT: That response has been met with nothing short of an overwhelming call for him to continue.

CM: Why don’t we take a poll…

INT: There have been polls taken

CM: …on Alderaan?

INT: Uh.

CM: Let’s ask the people of Alderaan what they think.

INT: Well, again, some would say that tragedy was a direct result of terrorists commandeering a mining facility and using to hold the entire galaxy hostage. 

CM: Was it really?

INT: Official reports have confirmed it.

CM: And what would you expect them to say?

INT: We’ve all seen the spectacular and tragic footage of rebel snubfighters attacking and boarding the mining station just before they turned it on that weaponless planet and massacred billions of peaceful people. Such a thing would be impossible to cover up.

CM: Perhaps that’s why there is another side to the story. As a journalist, even on a mouthpiece show like this one, you must recognize that others are telling a completely different version of those events.  And, if it’s true that the government project was called: Death Star, would that be just a little … odd? 

INT: Those theories were put forth by criminals and lawless terrorists.  None of it can be true.  That many people cannot keep that big a secret for that long a time.

CM: How many people swore on their lives that they knew exactly what happened to me?  How many people tried to get money from the media by enticing them with the truth about my disappearance?  How many of those people are proven completely wrong by my sitting here and talking to you?

INT: Well…

CM: Ask yourself this: If you had attained complete control of this station for several decades, where everything that was produced and broadcast was done only with your approval and then, one day, a letter came in with a bunch of signatures that said, “Please step down,” would you?  Would your first reaction be, “Hey, look they don’t want me anymore, I’ll just give all these years of being in command because they don’t like me anymore?” Do you really think that’s what you’d do?

INT: I suppose I wouldn’t.

CM: In all that time, I’ll bet you would have entrenched yourself with ‘job security’ assurances, allies, doctrine and procedure.  You’d use your position to further solidify itself.

INT: Maybe.

CM: Well, you’re right.  It’s not true for everybody, and perhaps not for you, but what if you took your worst adversary in this station, in this entire organization and put them in the exact same position?  What if you took your worst enemy in the entire galaxy and put him in that chair?  What do you think he would do to protect his position?

INT: Are you saying that Imperial Highness is your worst enemy?

CM: One: You’re deflecting the question, and I’ll allow it, for your sake.  Two: The Emperor is not my worst enemy.  I am.

INT: How so?

CM: Nobody else in this entire galaxy could have nor can hurt me as much as I can.

INT: Is this tied to your disappearance?

CM: Perhaps.  Although my disappearance is more tied to a block of cheese than anything suggested by the press.  Now, that producer of yours seems about ready to burst a vessel, so I think that’s our cue. 

INT: [Chuckles] Well, thank you very much for coming by, Creeva.  Cryptic as you are, it’s still an absolute delight!

CM: Thanks for the invitation, it was a pleasure being here.

The first thing I can say is that you haven’t heard of Digg.com where have you been. If you are still a regular slashdot.org user and you’ve never heard of digg.com – your geek card is now revoked.

What is Digg (from wikipedia):

Digg is a community-based popularity website with an emphasis on technology and science articles, recently expanding to a broader range of categories such as politics and entertainment. It combines social bookmarking, blogging, and syndication with a form of non-hierarchical, democratic editorial control.

News stories and websites are submitted by users, and then promoted to the front page through a user-based ranking system. This differs from the hierarchical editorial system that many other news sites employ.

Digg started out as an experiment in November 2004 by Kevin Rose, Owen Byrne, Ron Gorodetzky, and Jay Adelson (who serves as CEO), all of whom currently play an active role in the management of the site.

Digg has grown large enough that submissions sometimes create a sudden increase of traffic to the “dugg” website. This is referred to by some Digg users as the “Digg effect” and by some others as the site being “dugg to death”. However, in many cases stories are linked simultaneously on several popular bookmarking sites. In such cases, the impact of the “digg effect” is difficult to isolate and assess.

Now that I’ve given you the wikipedia history let’s give you some of mine with site – I’ve used digg for over a year and half as my geek news source – slashdot moved to slow for me to get enough of my geek news (I know I’m sad) – so I discovered digg after hearing coworkers and friends talk about it.

I’ve submitted a few stories to digg and I’ve even managed to get one on the front page. This is my sad sad little geek bragging right.

The whole point and problem of digg is that popular stories rise to the top and less interesting stories disappear. If your not using and RSS feed you will miss alot of things that may otherwise have interested you. If your interested in zombie dogs to working lego wii’s these all end up on digg.com.

Now I’m sure I’ve given you all information you already knew but I figured I would start with one of the easiest and most popular sites on the net.

The largest issue I have ever had with American politics is the issue of the electoral college. There is no reason in this day and age that we require the electoral college, an institute that does mandatorily required to represent the votes of it’s constituents. In the Ron Paul case this is still a fear with the way the major media companies are dismissing him that the electoral college would perform behind the scenes tactics to sway the vote.

Since the time of Reagan I have never felt this strongly about a politician and maybe his hope to change the world. I was pro-Bush in 2000 (which Ohio the state I was in voted for so my lack of a vote wouldn’t have changed anything). I was pro-Kerry in 2004 (which Oregon the state I was in voted for so my lack of a vote wouldn’t have changed anything). I still had a right to complain about the politics going on whether I voted or not – this is stated in my first amendment rights. Whether I voted or not the cookie would have crumbled the same way if I had.

Ron Paul on the other hand is speaking more directly to my heart, he is giving a message that makes me want to campaign and help him. Something I haven’t been behind doing ever. He is showing us what is right about America and how to take it back to America’s original vision (something that has always strayed me away from voting).

For a few years I suppose I thought I was anti-American for the public at large. I loved the original vision of the country and the country itself, but I hated our world wide policies and the restrictions that laws in the last few years had placed against our freedoms. Ron Paul has shown me that some people still think the way I do and it is very pro-American to think that way.
