I’m the crossposting whore – I write once and I have everything designed to publish everywhere (well at least when things aren’t broken like Ping.fm to Myspace blogs). This however is not syncing, it’s distribution and publishing. A true sync across all platforms would be amazing.

The example I would love is I make an edit to a blog post, then every place and profile that I’ve published that post on would update with no manual intervention. Since I can’t do that, Creeva.com is considered my authorative location for all blog posts. If I wanted to edit those other sites I would have to do each one manually. Granted I’m sure without using syncing it saves on bandwidth.

Things that I can sync? Well my contacts and calendars with Plaxo, but that kind of is just the tip of the iceberg. My biggest issue write now is syncing Flickr photos to Facebook. I am aware of Flickurbook, but this still uses your local machine – there is no reason this can’t be done “in the cloud”. It’s all soooo sloooooow. Seriously at the speed it moves I could just reupload all the pictures to Facebook faster then this thing goes. It’s free, it’s the developers fault, it’s great what he did; but it’s not the solution I’m looking for.

Finally using my distribution chain I chase all over the web to answer comments. I don’t mind doing that. However, wouldn’t it be better if across all platforms and services these comments were kept in sync? Then I could use the spam filters I wanted to from a central location. I could reply to comments from a central location.

I’m just pipedreaming again…..

A couple news sources are reporting today (here, here, and here) that the LA Times is suspending their program of using a wiki for editorials. Now in a controlled environment like Wikipedia where they have the volunteers to handle un-authorized edits, wiki’s can be a great thing. In the hands of exposing your edits to the audience of a major newspaper – I wouldn’t have gone that route.

What they were finding is that people would make their own slant on the editorials – such as changing the word abortion ot the word murder. They also were inundated with spam and porn ads. Sounds like they didn’t have the best idea on the onset of setting up a wiki or properly staffing what would be a high profile use of the technology. This is technology that is meant to be changed and updated. That ability alone has made some people suspect of Wikipedia. Newspapers are dying out in America – but this example shows why such high profile companies can not hand the keys to the car to just everyone asking. Citizen media has it’s place, but old media shouldn’t be attempting to tag it on without understanding hte consequences or the work involved in maintaining it.

I wonder if anyone got fired?

The recent twitter phishing scam had non twitter users scratching their heads on why this service would be targeted for a phishing scam at all.. Most people view little or no monetary value to twitter accounts. For most people this may actually be true. For people like Scoble or companies that promote themselves over twitter, well the brand name damage caused by a hijacked twitter account could be quite costly.

One of my friends on twitter had a reply about this issue (I’m assuming the other person didn’t realize the long tail potential impact (yes I used the term long tail – get over it)). What I saw was this:

@jeremyasmus could be any number of reasons, spread malware, spam, get passwords, us humans tend to use the same password over and over.

This is the crux of the issue isn’t it? The problem isn’t average user with nine friends directly, it’s the large power users and the passwords for other services. Let’s look at each of these.

Let’s say you are Scoble and your account get’s hijacked. Scoble has a level of trust built from himself, he is known to get the inside scoop on information, people click his links. Scoble has over 47,000 followers. If his account was hijacked and ten percent clicked a link that was really a malware installer – that would be 4,700 people infected within a matter of minutes. I think however the number of Scoble followers would be much larger probable in the 50-60% range. For a malware distribution this is a great return for the time frame, with the added benefit that you may get some other high profile names in the attack.

The cost to deploy such an attack is extremely low – under ten dollars, while the net return would be a few thousand, potentially more. Since there is little risk to getting caught if you know what you are doing, you could make some decent money by exploiting this chain of trust that exists and is protected by a mere password.

Let’s look at the side of this coin, the normal user. Adam Baldwin nailed it right on the head when he stated “us humans tend to use the same password over and over”. I know I do, though different level of things have different passwords – my banking account does not use the same username/password combination as my twitter account – neener/neener. It is however shared with some other web 2.0 services. Some other people may not be so diligent. This once again is a chain of trust issue. You are trusting the companies that you give your passwords to are truly them, so once your password is in the wild it’s exposed and all of your accounts are open to attack.

Let’s look at the information an attacker can get from you if they have your twitter password:

User Name – while by itself it’s exposing a little bit about your account and your password – the problem lies in having both bits of this information. That part should be blatantly obvious. The issue lies in the fact that most of us use the same username or “handle” across many sites on the web. Doing a Google search for “Creeva” yields over 46,000 hits. A lot of these hits are different services that I play with and over 90% of the hits link back directly to me in some fashion. Since most sites use you username as your login name, if I used the same password every single one of these services would be exposed if I fell for the twitter phising scam.

E-Mail Address – Yes though it maybe only a small amount these days, your e-mail address is still worth a few percentages of a penny to the spammer. This would get you on more mailing lists, and ones that would be quite hard to get off of. It is also normally used as a login name for service that do not use your handle. More accounts have now been exposed because of this. If your e-mail account passwords is the same as your twitter account (dumb mistake) everything about your online life, accounts, and transactions can now be exposed and utilized against you. Would you notice a gmail filter that someone setup to clone every incoming e-mail?

The other issue is even you do not have accounts that show up in a Google search they could use a service search engine such as Spokeo to find accounts even you may have forgotten about.

Mobile Phone Number – This probably would be one of the most annoying things, that your phone number has been exposed to the internet underground. Phone spam, call back charges; there are a few things they can do with this number. I do think this is small annoyance compared to loosing your email account.

Being a good security professional my recommendation is to use strong passwords that are unique to each service and are rotated regularly. I am also a realist and know that you won’t. This may be the time to start doing segmentation where different accounts do get different levels of passwords. This is what I do so if my twitter account was compromised only the services that I consider on par with Twitter security-wise was at risk. Lower level accounts would be safe and higher level accounts would be safe. I also think with the range of accounts, I could move faster then the phishers going through and knowing what to change faster then they could try all 46,000 sites. It’s a thought – now what are yours?

Picture from here

I was reading a story on slashdot about how Skyhook Wireless has been wardriving the United States mapping MAC addresses from the wireless routers it detects to your geographic location. Now first for those paranoid, they probably are not going to get your exact physical address but it will be “close” – close is defined as within 500 feet.

Following the discussions on the slashdot posting, you can see that some geeks are freaked out. They are worried about getting spam to their physical location (my email address has nothing to do with my physical location). They are stating to change your mac address so it obsoletes the database. While this is doable, there is another better scenario for this. If you should find your MAC address on this database or you wish to preemptively strike against this mapping when it comes to your MAC address, you are going to have to change your mac address.

Most wireless routers allow you to change the MAC Address on your wifi segment. If your router does not allow you to do this please purchase a new router if you wish to proceed. While a MAC address needs to be unique on a network segment (so the computers can talk to each other) they do not have to be unique in the universe, in the world, in the country, in the state, or even in the same town. If the signals are weak and shielded enough to prevent interference you could have duplicate MAC addresses in the same apartment building, though I wouldn’t recommend that and it would negate this exercise anyways.

Now you are all ready to change your MAC address, what do you change it to? How about the same as the McDonald’s in times square? Your friend can snag you one the from the Panera Bread in Anchorage, Alaska. Maybe you want your house to have the same MAC address as the wifi routers in Disney World. If you want to be boring go up to your local Best Buy look at what their MAC address is set to, though it would still be local to you somewhat then. I’m not going to go through and state how to get these MAC addresses, but most people that would actually bother to do this already know how. If you need further instruction drop me a comment and I may go into it.

By changing the MAC address you have now poisoned the Geo-Location database that Skyhook Wireless has saved about you. Even if they grab your MAC address after you have changed it, which MAC Geo location is going to take precedence – Times Square or Podunk, Iowa? There is a chance if Skyhook doesn’t have it’s weighting algorithms correct and all those people at McDonalds in Times Square would have their location showing as Podunk Iowa – though it would be amusing to use the API and have it say that there are 300 people currently in your house.

You can get more documentation on the API from here and here.

Sometimes people over think the problem when a simpler and more elegant solution can be utilized. If in the end Skyhook data can’t be trusted, it will not be used.

The other day I received this e-mail in my inbox:

Hi Creeva,

I would love a review of my site if you feel it would be worthwhile…

Twiggit is an automated service that lets your friends on twitter know what articles you digg. every so often we check for the last article that you voted for on digg, and update your twitter status to reflect this. Options include the ability to only tweet the articles you submit rather than digg, pause the service at anytime, change the frequency of when to check digg, completly remove your twiggit account.

There is nothing like this in the market, we aim to bring digg and twitter closer together!

http://twiggit.org/

Any questions please let me know :-)

It took me a few days to add this onto my plate, but I did get around to signing up for the website. At one time I attempted to crosspost all of my online activities over to twitter – this got way to spammy. When I set it up this account I configured itto send everything I submit on Digg to crosspost over to Twitter. Since I sometimes will go on a digg spree and digg 50 stories in a day I didn’t want all of them to show up as tweets. Props to them for thinking about this.

To test this out I submitted a recent story I wrote onto Digg attempting to find out a title about a movie I was tracking down. The product works as designed. All in all there is no frills, it’s single purpose – but single purpose that works quite well. There are other methods of doing this such as importing feeds into twitter – but while Twiggit is essentially doing this at the back end – it makes it easier for people that would be intimidated by the level of understanding that this takes. Twiggit is something I would send over so my parents could set up (if any of them used Digg or Twitter), versus something psuedo complex that I would have ot configure for them.

On the downsides, there website shows the following image:

If you look at the bottom of the image it says it received it 2 minutes ago from Twiggit. This acknowledgment seems to be missing from my tweet which states submitted 1 hour ago from web. I’m assuming this is a bug.

All in all Twiggit is not something groundbreaking, but it’s deserves it’s niche. In the era we are moving into of micro-niches it fits in quite nicely. With all the sites that integrate with Twitter, Twitter needs to start setting up a developer API similar to Google or Flickr so we don’t actually have to give these sites our Twitter usernames and passwords. That however is a rant for another day.

UPDATE:

Originally the title mentioned Twiggit.com – which is the parent website of twiggit.org – the application is at twiggit.org. Unfortunately I can’t catch everywhere I crossposted this story to, but I’m editing here on the source site.

It seems that hi5 doesn’t use the same friend finding connections method that other sites do. Because of this I accidently spammed over 700 invites to people that I know personal and professional. I’m not going to send out another e-mail as a retraction. It still is a pain in the ass.

Normal social network searches your contacts list and finds people that you know already on the service. This is all fine and dandy. Then when you click ok it then lists your friends not on the service and wants to know if you want to invite them. At this point on all other services I click no. Hi5 however hid what is normally the second page option down at the bottom of the screen and then proceeded to spam everyone on my contacts list.

I feel like an idiot – but live and learn.

I was informed last week that the Stars of Intrepid Wiki I had setup to save the history of the Intrepid server from Star Wars Galaxies had a sudden influx of gold farming spammers. I went and checked it out and Daethe seemed to be on top of taking care of the edits. Over the weekend however more of this popped up, so I went hunting on how to block spam on a MediaWiki installation. I found this article which gave me some options, and I think I implemented about all of them.

We’ll see how it goes and if I’m on top of it now.

Picture from here

I thought the teens and pre-teens were the sounding board for tomorrows technology. Well this isn’t always the case. I previously mentioned talking with my brother over the weekend. Well there is more to it then just the security post that came out of it. He complained that he wasn’t getting confirmation e-mails for some of the web services he was using and he thought they may be getting caught by his spam filter. I asked him which e-mail provider he was using. He’s using his ISP…………..

I may be 32, but I have two brothers that are twins that are thirteen years old. They have the fear of sharing their name online and everything else they will get over as they get older (or become completely paranoid and withdraw from the Internet entirely by the time they are 20). They don’t however use web based e-mail. I understand that they should be showing me what is new and interesting, so I expected Myspace or some such service for sending e-mails to friends. Well they don’t, but part of that is that my 26 year old brother who sets up the web filtering for my dad frowns upon Myspace for that age group because of worrying about pedophiles I suppose (though a child is 99.9 more likely to be molested by a relative or immediate friend of the family instead of being attacked by an online predator). My father and step-mother aren’t too hot on it either – they believe in the sunshine and dirt makes strong boys. I’m more of the give me a book and a bed to lay on, or a laptop and a Gameboy with a bed to lay on type of guy.

They don’t however use web based e-mail – I haven’t used a strictly POP3 mail solution since college – so 14 years of using web based e-mail. With the exception of corporate mail I can’t understand using it any other way. Spam control is easier, you can access your e-mail from anywhere, you can archive your mail online without ever losing anything. I started a series about computing in the clouds and even did one subject on web based e-mail. The generation that comes after us (and the age difference is pretty much a generation) should have a more refined method of handling data. It’s seems they choose to hamstring themselves then to learn and be more interactive. That is not the case.

I have a sister that is pretty much from the mind set of using the computer as a utility or appliance. It’s something that’s only slightly more interactive then a game system or television set. I understand that mentality. I figured however it was something that would end with my generation. It seems not, the next generation at least in my family is not grasping and making tech work for them they are working for their technology. What I mean by that is they put more effort into the computer then they need to, the computer should be a tool to make things faster and easier. Not using it to the fullest extent you can and streamlining what you do is almost a shame.

My 26 year old brother and myself when we had our own computers kept pushing the line and seeing what we can do next. He was twelve/thirteen when I went to college and he was running his own BBS. He went the design and programming route. I went the security and architecture route. Both of us are very good at what we do in our own fields – at least we think so. Though we have very little overlap since both of us view the other person as focusing on the wrong things. The thirteen year olds don’t have the same in depth interaction with their computers. Maybe this is a problem with growing up with computers their whole lives. It’s not viewed with the same regard as it was for me and my next youngest brother.

It does give me some slight hope that the current twenty something and young thirty somethings are the height of the internet users while the rest of them stagnate and fully pushed the line. But the youngest brothers have a few years to catch up and may do something with it yet, so I can’t fully discount them until the future arrives.

Now if they are reading this – go get a Gmail address and learn how to use it. My father-in-law and mother-in-law have even moved to Gmail and it only took them a few minutes to learn it.

I really want to tweet every song I’m listening to, every image I upload, and every piece of digital property I touch and interact with. I don’t though since that could generate hundreds of tweets on some days. My friends won’t stand for it. So I use things like a filtered RSS feed to alert my followers of new blog posts, and I actually do interact with it (unlike some services).

I’ve mentioned in passing in the past that I do crosspost across the interwebs. I’ve stated before, yet I’ll mention it again for this series that I do it so readers can access me where they want. Yesterday I posted that I was making it a goal of mine to see how many possible services. Since I’m doing this I figured that could I get my information to my readers on how to do this, the why is a little toughter to answer. While this information could theoretically be used for spam blogs, I’m in the sincere hope that you do it to keep in touch with your friends.

Crossposting did start out as keeping in touch with friends in other services so I didn’t have to login into them. Very truly there are only a handful of web services that I truly interact with, I’ll leave comments or talk to users when I actually do login, but the path where I create original content on is quite narrow. My blog (where you may be reading this) of course is my primary outlet where I write, the secondary service I use incessantly is twitter. Pictures and movies of course have a completely different avenue of entries into the interwebs, but I do so much more when it comes to text. Through the course of this series I will be covering text, video, audio, and meta data crossposting.

Later today I will be starting with crossposting to Vox and from there I’ll write an article per service, there will be some overlapping on techniques to get data into a service, but I won’t be using the same technique on the same day. So if I use e-mail crossposting as a method, the next will be either RSS entry or a helper site. I won’t be releasing all of my secret sauce, but just enough of it so you should be able to figure out the missing pieces for yourself.

What do I mean by out Scoble, Scoble himself? I’m not going to make as much money as he does, I’m not going to get as many followers as he does, and I’m not going to ever get to play with all the toys he does, and I’ll never have his connections. So how am I going to out do him?

Data distribution.

Last week someone asked me how I distribute my data across the Internet, at first I grabbed a piece of paper. After starting the diagram I realized it was way too inefficient in space requirements, so I moved on to a piece of poster board. After I had a rough diagram I was told I must surely be kidding. I assure you when it comes to my blog I never kid, and don’t call me Shirley.

After relaying this story to a friend he said he would be interested in how I distribute my data. So I put this challenge on myself, to come up with an accurate diagram of how I push my data, and include passive inclusion in sites like google at the same time. The goal is to see how much data I truly generate with each post. Instead of just ramping up to include everything I’ve joined so far I’m taking it up a notch. I’m going to seehow truly far I can push the envelope on passing this data and making it grow. Sort of a tsunami of Internet data.

I will only have one account per service and stick with their own functionality, I won’t do any data passing manually, nor will I use a second account (since that’s cheating). If I managed to spam my data to 5000 twitter accounts who would subscribe to any of them? No one, so I have to take the point of view I’ve always stated, this is about distributing data to my friends no matter what service they are on. It’s kind of the opposite of data portability, so with that in mind I’m calling this the data pushability project.

I’m going to continue until July 1st to see how many services that I can link, crosspost, and pull in unique data from that either I create or I theoretically own (comments to my posts I have a stake in and much as my del.icio.us bookmarks). I want all the sites to automatically handle the data and use tools provided to me by web services. I’m targetting social networks and the like, but my friend asked me what am I going to do when the social network craze is over. I explained that this is more proof of concept and Internet distribution. Those are the factors that ring my bell, the friends and popularity contest really aren’t my driving factor. Getting my stuff read, that’s what I want. I don’t care if you friend me or not.

So look forward to a diagram the first week of July that shows how far data can really be pushed in todays Internet era.

was accused the other day of spamming Myspace with all of my updates, though it was indirectely on a friend’s blog via the comment section of a post he did on twitter. The poster (I’m looking at you Tevy) thought I was using twitter to crosspost to everything. Here was my reply:

Tevy’s my setup is kind of unique but I’ll give you the run down.

I post to my blog at creeva.com – when I make a post my blog crossposts to myspace, vox, livejournal, dandelife, blogger, msn spaces, xanga, and multiply.

My website also has an outbound feed – this is filtered to certain topics and posts notifications to twitter, tumblr, jaiku, facebook, and suprglu.

At then end of the day all the web services that I use (flickr, allconsuming, 43things, 43 places, cocomment, digg, del.icio.us, google reader shared items, youtube favorites, youtube uploads, picasa, photobucket, stumbleupon, newsvine, pownce, and any other blogs I use) are each wrapped up with whatever I’ve done on any of those respectice services through out the day and done as a single post (per service) on my blog.

Of course once a post is made on my blog it gets cross posted to myspace etc, with the exception of twitter (since I use it for notifications AND personal use) nothing really hits my blog twice since I’ve been very careful of any redundant data processing.

We’ll just say I love wordpress plugins

A few article I’ve written on this:

http://creeva.com/2008/01/11/life-caching-is-better-then-life-streams/
http://creeva.com/2008/01/23/brand-management-branding-yourself/

I’m sure what I’ve written above is missing some services and such but that’s about 90% of what is going on.

Now I know that this leads to alot of updates on myspace, but I’m sure this seems unnatural to some since most the people I know post next to nothing. 99% of the updates I see are XXXX updated profile information. I look at the profile and it looks the same to me. Very few people actually constantly upload pictures (I’m looking at an automated way to do this from my flickr account) or write blog posts. So sometimes I need to go to other services to find the people like me that update their profile information and create content.

I truly want to read content from people I know, look at their pictures, or watch their videos it’s just that there seems to be so little, while I of course go through my cross posting glut. My friends don’t like switching services and that’s fine, I’ll just bring all my glut of information and data to them.

Original From Journey To Get Paid: Google’s Next Service Should Be – Google Reporting.

Google is all about consolidation of data, there whole mantra is behind it. They have released oodles and oodles of services that I utilize (yes I’m a google whore – there I said it), but only minimal correlation between the tools other then a common login. Many of their tools generate reports or data that could be transformed into reports. Some of their services it’s almost brain dead that they haven’t integrated the services. Let’s go through the services and how I would design “Google Reports”.

The most obvious Google “products” I would lump together would be Google Analytics, Google Webmaster Tools, Google Adsense, and Google Adwords. All four of these products are usually used together – so why can’t we get reporting for all three on one page? All of these products can give a webmaster an overview on where his site(s) are going and what he can work on. There is absolutely no reason to go through four different interfaces to get this information. Yes I can set up email reports from some of them – but a singlular report and page to view them at a quick glance would be great. If I click on something to drill down on it could then take me to to the specific related products page. While we are the subject of Google Analytics – a listing of recent page views ala the way statcounter does it would be great. To be honest that’s the only reason I still use my statcounter account.

Those were the four products that prompted me thinking about this in total from the beginning. Now let’s move on to the other products, video for example. Google Video and Youtube both fit different niches in the google video structure. Youtube allows you to upload video more quickly but has time and size limits, Google Video however allows downloads and unlimited sized and no time limits when you use their external (non browser based) uploader. Now Google Video’s reporting very frequently fails to work – loosing view and download counts so this needs to be addressed. But a report that would include subscribers, views, and downloads would be fantastic.

Feedburner should be tied into analytics also for the amount of information it gives you and stats, while I’m on a mini rant here when are we going to be able to inject adsense into our feedburner items?

Now let’s break into the quickies:

Google Base – ok I still don’t understand this product so I have no idea.

Blogger and Page Creator would tie in easily with Analytics – so there is no reason not to make this automated.

Browser Sync – The number of synchronizations and all machine that you ahve synchronized against.

Calender – Ok trickier but the number of appointments from a given day/month/week

Docs – Number of edits, number of documents, space they take up, and how many of your colloboration documents have had edits.

Gmail – Number of emails received, sent, spam caught, most frequent contacts, amount of free disk space.

Groups – could tie into Analytics if your the group owner but beyond that – number of members and messages – how many new messages if your just a reader.

Igoogle – um no clues

Reader – number of stories read

Picasaweb – how many times each photo was viewed, who has linked to it, and any subscribers

Finally webhistory – the amount of searches performed, and a concise list of sites embedded in the reports.

I would want to see report being able to be generated automatically on a daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly basis. The ability to customize reports by date or time period would also be great. The ability to atomically email them to you at a preset time would be fantastic.

The last feature I would add is an open API so we could plugin new reports and send them to google to collect and have other programs able to fetch and manipulate the data on a client side. I know I’m asking pie in the sky at this point.

Google literally has all this data on us and more. They are preaching data portability and openness so why don’t they consolidate and show us more of the data they are holding. I’m not asking for all of the secret sauce just what’s relevant to me. Combing the original few things before I went into quickie mode though would be utterly fantastic and an excellent starting place.

I received the following email from said “Corrine Marrero”? I know this is “spam” but they aren’t selling anything and since I use gmail I don’t see any html or anything that could be issue so the spamminess is in question. Why I do ask is that “Corrine” addressed this email to createdomain11@yahoo.com and not me directly – I want to know if this is a mailing list relay that I and or anyone else who let’s me know they are not can be informed and I can contact yahoo to shutdown that address.

If you can respond that would be great – if you don’t want to share your email address go to http://creeva.com/2008/04/10/did-you-get-spammed-from-a-corrine-marrero/ and leave a comment (real email not required) – use that option only if your worried about sending me your email addressed. If we can’t find out this is a mailing list we can’t get off of it.
